Sketching Depth with a Two-Layer Watercolor Technique

Sketching Depth with a Two-Layer Watercolor Technique

Exploring the serene beauty of nature through urban sketching offers a unique opportunity to capture the essence of our natural surroundings. In a recent session, I experimented with a two-layer watercolor technique to depict a tranquil landscape.

First Layer: Establishing the Foundation

I began by lightly sketching the scene to outline the primary elements. I sketched the main subject of my sketch, leaving out anything in the background that would only distract from the tree trunk I wanted to focus on. This initial layer set the overall mood and composition of the sketch.

Second Layer: Adding Depth and Detail

Once the first layer dried, I applied more concentrated pigments to introduce shadows and highlights. This step involved refining the textures of the tree trunk and surrounding elements, bringing the composition to life.

This approach not only enhances the visual appeal of the sketch but also allows for a deeper visual understanding of the subject. I encourage you to experiment with layering techniques to enrich your sketches.
